The last time we The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride), they were fighting through bioluminescent zombie hordes in a chunnel en route to England. You might expect the highly-anticipated season 3 teaser of Daryl Dixon to tee off on the white cliffs of Dover, or in the ruined core of London, or even amid a battle in an ancient British cathedral – but not so.

From the first season 3 teaser’s opening seconds, featuring a scintillating Spanish guitar and crowds reveling through a sun-bleached, sandstone-covered outcropping, it’s clear Daryl and Carol made a detour.

“It felt like somethin’ got lost, the chance to really have somethin’,” Reedus intones in voiceover in his usual dusky baritone. Carol adds, “First you survive what happened to you, then you start living again.”

For a few seconds, it seems the best buds, who met way back on a 2010 episode of the first season of The Walking Dead, may do just that – live, laugh, relax. But if 15 years of zombie mayhem have taught fans anything, its to always expect danger around the corner from calm.

The rest of the teaser for season 3 of Daryl Dixon depicts just that – desperate defense against the savage droves of zombies, hungry for flesh. “A new fight begins,” reads one mid-teaser intertitle. But it’s not all so grim. Daryl ends the teaser with a bit of hard-fought optimism – “A friend of mine used to say, ‘Bet on hope.'”

The third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is set to premiere on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, Sep. 7. The teaser first airs on on the season 2 finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City, yet another spinoff of the prolific post-apocalyptic series adapted by Frank Darabont from the comic series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.

The official logline for Daryl Dixon season 3 notes that viewers will get to “follow Daryl and Carol as they continue their journey to somehow return home and to the ones they love. As they struggle to find their way back, the path takes them farther astray, leading them through distant lands with ever-changing and unfamiliar conditions as they witness the various effects of the Walker apocalypse.”

Joining Reedus and McBride are new Spanish cast members Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, and Alexandra Masangkay, as well as Hugo Arbués, Greta Fernández, Gonzalo Bouza, Stephen Merchant, and more.

In Entertainment Weekly‘s cover story on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon last September, Reedus and McBride reminisced on the first time they bonded as actors and characters – when McBride’s Carol was forced to kill her husband after he’d become zombified.

“You had to put down your husband, and I kept handing you a bloody pickaxe,” Reedus recalled. “I kept dipping it in a bucket of brains and blood… and the final time, you just yanked it out of my hand and I’m like, ‘God, I love her.'”

“They are the only two left,” McBride said, referring to herself and Reedus, the only remaining TWD season 1 cast still working within the franchise. “They were just so close in the beginning, and they have a very long tight bond with each other, and it’s been challenged so many times. And to tell this story that we’re telling now is just beautiful to me, all these years later.”
