A classic UK horror film that’s not available to stream online is airing on TV tonight (Sunday, June 15) for free.

Fans of the genre will be rushing to the cinema on Friday (June 20) to see Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years later.

Released 23 years after the original, the horror is set nearly three decades after a rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory.

While the majority of people are still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected.

A group of survivors on a small island remain connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. However, trouble ensues when a father and his son leave the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland.

Fans have been waiting for Boyle to return to the series for years, with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing the first sequel 28 Weeks later in 2007.

With Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes leading the new venture, now is the perfect time to visit where everything started.

28 Days later stars Cillian Murphy as a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover that that society has collapsed, with zombies roaming the streets.

Attempting to survive in a world he doesn’t recognise, Murphy is joined by Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns and Brendan Gleeson in supporting roles.

Kicking off the 21st century zombie revival, the film was applauded for capturing the lengths the world will go to survive in the face of evil.

Boyle famously closed the streets of London to transform typically busy areas into a shell of their former selves.

Boasting a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film grossed a staggering $84.6 million worldwide on a budget of $8 million.

Despite being one of the most famous horror movies of all time, 28 Days Later has been missing from streaming for a number of years.

It is believed that when Disney lost the rights to the series to Sony, they were unable to stream it on Disney+ anymore.

On top of this, 28 Days Later has become difficult to find on DVD and Blu-ray due to going out of print a number of years ago, with expensive second hand copies being sold online.

With lots of people looking to catch up on the original outing before heading to the cinema, it’s time to have a quiet night in and prepare to get scared.

28 Days Later airs on Sunday, June 15, on BBC One and on the BBC iPlayer at 10.30pm
