I love a good zombie flick. The subgenre may not be as popular as it once was, but there are still plenty of shambling corpses around if you know where to look. Shudder, for instance, quietly hosts Virus-32, one of the best undead flicks released in years, and maybe the closest we’ve come to a movie capturing the spirit (not just the plot) of a Resident Evil game. Later this year, we’ll get the first in a new trilogy with Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later. They may not technically be zombies, but they also pretty much are.

Sure, it’s not undead fever like it was back when The Walking Dead first premiered, but I never exactly grew tired of zombie movies. I earnestly love it when one surprises me. Train to Busan? Netflix’s #Alive? Classics, man. Naturally, it means I’m always on the hunt for more hidden undead gems, and I think I might have found one streaming on Netflix right now.
Boasting strong critical and audience reviews, learn more about Carlo Ledesma’s Outside below:
Per Netflix: In this tense thriller, a family fights for survival on an isolated farm after civilization collapses during a zombie apocalypse.
Netflix, if nothing else, is a great place to track down solid international horror fare. While I wish they’d do more to promote their offerings, there are few streamers hosting as many hidden international gems as they do. Outside is the rare Philippine zombie movie, and while it culls from several classics of the subgenre, Ledesma (who also wrote the script) does just enough to keep his undead feeling fresh and, interestingly, alive.

Critical reviews were strong. Presently, Outside boasts a strong 80% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. And I can personally attest to Outside’s strengths. It’s beefier than most zombie movies, clocking in at over two hours, but the time zips by. Outside is chock-full of tense moments, strong performances, and refreshing twists on longstanding zombie tropes. If you’re even remotely a fan of the undead, this one works well enough to more than justify renewing your faith in zombies. Pair it with some of Netflix’s other hidden zombie gems (again, #Alive) and make it a whole undead weekend. You can even check out one of Quentin Tarantino’s least favorite movies while you’re there.
What do you think? What’s been your favorite zombie movie of the past few years? Any plans to check out Outside on Netflix? If you do, let me know what you think on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
