If you are tired of classic zombie projects like The Last of Us, then this show will definitely hook you. The 2008 series already featured Charlie Brooker’s signature style – where else would you see a fight for survival against zombies in a TV studio?
The main project of Charlie Brooker’s career, Black Mirror, was released in 2011 and has since become the main sci-fi anthology of the 21st century.
However, three years before the premiere of the show about fear of technology, Brooker created and wrote a series that echoes Black Mirror in the absurdity of its concept.
In 2008, the show Dead Set was released, which crossed the social context with the attributes of the horror genre – and all fans of zombie shows in an unusual setting should definitely see it.
What Is Dead Set About?
The UK has been hit by a mysterious virus, similar to the one that paralyzed the country in a matter of hours in Danny Boyle ‘s 28 Days Later. In Dead Set, a mysterious disease also turns people into zombies, and ordinary people will have to face them.
Isolated in a TV studio, the group of contestants on the reality show Big Brother learned about the tragedy later than anyone else. But then a real game of survival began, and not everyone would win.
Dead Set Was Inspired by the Real-Life Big Brother Show
The idea for the project came to director Yann Demange while watching the original Big Brother reality show. According to him, a house fenced off from the outside world could be an excellent shelter from the invasion of the undead.
The creators of the original reality show chose contestants with opposite personalities to make it difficult for them to get along – this trick was borrowed by the creators of Dead Set.
A group of completely different people gathers within the walls of the TV studio, and the real zombie apocalypse is aggravated by conflicts in the group of survivors. They can’t stand each other, but must unite to survive in a building surrounded by hordes of zombies hungry for human flesh.
Dead Set Is Pure Trash Zombie Horror at Its Finest
In Dead Set, you won’t find the stunning cinematography of The Last of Us or philosophical reflections on the value of life’s small pleasures – just a shaky camera, widespread panic, foul language, and gallons of fake blood.
There are only five episodes– and it’s perfect timing. No time for filler, just survival.
What Did Critics & Fans Think of Dead Set?
The British project was nominated for a BAFTA award for best drama series, but did not win. What’s more important, Dead Set impressed critics and viewers alike.
- The series has 92% from critics and 77% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
- On IMDb, Dead Set has a score of 7.6/10.
Where to Watch Dead Set?
