The Chicken Jockeys are one of the weirdest and the rarest mobs— baby zombie, husk, or the drowned, riding the chicken, in Minecraft. The tiny terrors are unpredictable, fast, and quite surprisingly dangerous. But how do you actually find or spawn a Chicken Jockey? Whether you are hunting them for fun or want them for the farm, here is what you need to know about it.
Natural spawning conditions for Chicken Jockey
In Minecraft’s Java Edition, the Chicken Jockeys have a smaller chance to appear when the baby zombie or the variants spawn. There is a 5% chance it will hop on to the exciting chicken nearby. If there is no chicken around, there is another 5% chance it would spawn with the fresh chicken mount. It means you are highly likely to see them in the areas where the chicken naturally spawns, like forests or plains.
The Bedrock edition of Minecraft works quite differently. Here, the baby zombies have a 15% chance of seeking out mounts when attacking. However, they are not limited to the chickens. They might even ride the cows, pigs, or the other zombies, making the pure Chicken Jockeys quite rarer in the version.
Boosting your chance to spawn a Chicken Jockey
If you want to force the Chicken Jockey to spawn, the best bet is the creation of a zombie farm near the chickens. The baby zombies have a low spawn rate. It increases the zombie spawns (in the darkroom or the mob grinder), which will increase your odds. Light up the nearby areas to prevent the other mobs from spawning. Let the zombies wander near the chicken pen.
Another trick is to use name tags to prevent despawning. If the baby zombie spawns on the chicken, tag both of them to keep them around. It is useful if you are building a collection or just want a chaotic pet.
Spawning Chicken Jockeys with Commands
For the players (Java and Bedrock Edition) who want the guaranteed Chicken Jockeys, the commands offer precise control. The key command here is, /summon chicken ~ ~ ~ {Passengers:[{id:zombie,IsBaby:1}]}.
Adding the command will spawn the chicken with the baby zombie rider. You can even customize it by specifying the variants of the zombie— /summon chicken ~ ~ ~ {Passengers:[{id:husk,IsBaby:1}]}.
For the Bedrock edition, the syntax is a bit different— /summon chicken ~~~ minecraft:ride_as_passenger {entities:[{id:”minecraft:zombie”,IsBaby:1}]}
Note: These commands only work in the creative mode and not the survival mode. Even in creative mode, if you see that the commands are not permitted, allow them before you use them.
Chicken Jockey’s behavior and weaknesses
Chicken Jockeys are faster than the regular zombies. They do not take the fall damage, all thanks to the slow-fall ability of the chicken. They can even squeeze through the 1-block gaps, making them trickier to be trapped. However, the baby zombies could suffocate if the chicken moves under the solid blocks. So, open spaces work best to farm them.
When killed, the Chicken Jockey drops feathers, rotten flesh, and, at times, equipment. The baby-drowned variants might even drop the tridents, making them worth a hunt.
The mobs might look silly, but they are hard to find, especially if the baby zombie spawns with the weapon or armor. So, always have decent gear before you hunt them. Now, get out there and see if luck brings the Chicken Jockey your way!
