George A. Romero’s Final ‘Dead’ Movie (for now) leaves Amazon Prime Video in Just a Few Days

George Romero is the godfather of zombie movies. Everyone knows that. His “Dead” series that began with Night of the Living Dead (1968) is the most influential zombie franchise in the world. As of this writing, four out of the six installments in the series are available to watch as part of a Prime subscription. But that won’t be the case for much longer.

Survival of the Dead, the sixth and final of Romero’s “Dead” movies, is leaving Prime Video. The last day to watch is June 17th, 2025. After that, it will likely go back to being offered as only a digital rental or purchase, regardless of whether you have a Prime Subscription or not.

Survival of the Dead is a sequel to (or really, a spinoff of) Diary of the Dead. It features a character briefly seen in the earlier film, Sergeant “Nicotine” Crockett of the National Guard. Crockett and his guardsmen end up heading out to an island where they get mixed up in the mess created by two feuding families. Check out the trailer below.

The timeline of the Dead movies is fluid. Meaning, each movie appears to take place in the time period that it was made, but the in-universe timeline is much closer together than it would seem. Survival of the Dead, despite being the last film released and apparently set in modern (2009) times, actually takes place chronologically somewhere around the time of Dawn of the Dead with some potential time overlap. But Diary and Survival are so different from the rest of the movies in terms of story that they can easily be watched as their own, separate duology. Or, like any of the Dead movies, Survival can be watched on its own just fine.

George Romero wanted to conclude the story he began with Night of the Living Dead and told through to Land of the Dead, but Survival were not the ending he wanted. He began writing a treatment for a movie titled Twilight of the Dead which would continue the story from Land, but he sadly passed away in 2017 before anything came of it.

It was reported that his estate wanted to continue what Romero started and complete Twilight of the Dead, and news has continued to come out about developments as recently as November of 2024 when Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel were announced as part of the cast, and Brad Anderson signed on as the director.

So, Survival of the Dead is the final Dead movie, but potentially only for right now. And if you want to watch it on Prime, you only have about a week (or less, depending on when you read this) to watch it as part of your Prime Video Description. It’s leaving on June 17th, so plan accordingly. To make it easy, listed below are links to all six Dead movies on Amazon:
