“Truly terrifying” hit horror video game is getting a movie adaptation – Digital Spy

Phasmophobia, the “truly terrifying” hit horror video game, is getting a film adaptation from the makers of Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Conjuring.

The 2020 game, from studio Kinetic Games, sees players assume the role of a paranormal investigator for a spot of ghost hunting as they inspect various locations that have been haunted by the unknown.

Initially released on PC before coming to consoles last year, Phasmophobia will now hit the big screen after Kinetic Games confirmed a film adaptation is being developed, with the studio collaborating with Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster on the project.

“We’re thrilled to officially announce that a Phasmophobia film adaptation is in development,” said Daniel Knight, Director of Kinetic Games, in a statement. “It’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting.

“We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond.”

“Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops,” added Knight, who also served as lead developer on the video game.

Blumhouse Productions is famed for its work in the horror genre with franchises such as The Purge, Insidious, Paranormal Activity and Five Night at Freddy’s, with the studio also garnering acclaim for films such as Get Out, The Invisible Man and Speak No Evil.

Atomic Monster, founded by popular filmmaker James Wan, is the company who brought us The Conjuring Universe, with its more recent output including comedic takes on the horror genre such as M3GAN and The Monkey.

Phasmophobia, billed as a “unique blend” of “immersive paranormal investigation” and “co-operative” gameplay, has been a hit with players over the past few years. Kinetic Games reports it’s surpassed 23 million global sales.

The game was also lauded by critics, with PC Gamer describing it as “truly terrifying” as it heralded it as “the best ghost game ever made”. Polygon deemed it “brilliant” and praised the studio for nailing the “little details” present in the genre.

Phasmophobia has no release date yet.
