While it may not seem like it, the summer time is the perfect period to watch horror movies. Forget superhero flicks and bombastic blockbusters. It’s all about the jump scares.
2025 looks to be a decent year for more original ideas (see: “Sinners” and “Weapons”) and remakes alike (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”).
June is no outlier. Here are the horror movies to keep an eye out for throughout the month.
Sinners (June 3, PVOD)
Arguably one of the biggest surprises of the year came in the form of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” This modern day vampire tale set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta follows Michael B. Jordan is a dual role as he confronts the evil that made him. Not only did this movie play well in theaters – it made $267 million domestically and $350 million worldwide – but it was also a critical success. What’s more, Coogler will have the intellectual property of the “Sinners” world revert back to his ownership in about a quarter of a century.
Predator: Killer of Killers (June 6, Hulu)
The “Predator” franchise will get not one but two movies this year. The first to drop will be the animated “Killer of Killers,” which takes place throughout three distinct time periods of Earth’s history. As viewers are taken from Vikings to feudal Japan to World War II, the characters of the movie universe must contend with the threat of the alien hunting predator.
Best Wishes to All (June 13, Shudder/AMC+)
While streaming shouldn’t be the only place viewers watch movies, it has opened up a chance for a variety of projects to thrive. Shudder is an excellent place for horror fans to get their fix with original and acquired programming available to watch. Take Yûta Shimotsu’s “Best Wishes to All,” an eerie thriller where a young woman discovers a dark family secret that lives inside of her. If the trailer is any indication, this Japanese language flick will be terrifying.
28 Years Later (June 20, Theaters)
The long awaited sequel to two movies that changed the zombie movie genre, “28 Years Later” has lofty expectations about it. Thankfully, director/writer Danny Boyle is still in charge and can hopefully usher the series into the modern day. Survivors of the zombie virus live on an island but are soon overtaken by the realities of the mutated world.
M3GAN 2.0 (June 27, Theaters)
The surprise hit returns! M3GAN will be an anti-hero as she takes on Amelia, a new version of the robot who was built using stolen M3GAN’s tech. Director/writer Gerard Johnstone, Akela Cooper and James Wan all return to the second film. Their creepy, thrilling touches will surely be appreciated once more.
