Danny Boyle’s next zombie movie in the “28 Days Later” saga was filmed with numerous Apple phones.

The use of Apple phones as film cameras for movies is nothing new: director Steven Soderbergh (“Ocean’s Eleven”), for example, shot his film “Unsane” [1] on the iPhone 7 Plus back in 2018. Apple itself also likes to use the smartphone for its own campaigns, not least to demonstrate how professional images from the device can look. With “28 Years Later”, however, a new Hollywood film is now coming to cinemas that seems to go beyond the dimensions of previous iPhone films. The zombie thriller by director Danny Boyle is likely to be the biggest blockbuster ever filmed on the iPhone. It is interesting to note how the director uses the Apple phone.

Boyle is not only known to Apple users from classics such as “Trainspotting”, but also from the rather underrated biopic “Steve Jobs” [2]. For “28 Years Later”, Boyle has now used the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not just one, but a total of 20 in one rig, at least for certain scenes. This was reported by the gaming site IGN [3], which was also able to speak to Boyle.

According to Boyle, the 20 iPhones represent a “bullet time” shot for arms. “Bullet time” means that a protagonist is shot in a circle from all sides while time seems to stand still. The rig should also make it possible to send people “directly into the scene”. The film is shot at a 180-degree angle.

It remains unclear how much material actually comes from the iPhone, as Boyle apparently also used regular digital cameras. But the iPhone gives the film a special aesthetic, he says. The director has already used consumer technology in the past. For example, the first film in the series, “28 Days Later”, was filmed on a Canon with mini DV cassettes, again in large parts and even in SD resolution. The film is in the 2.76:1 widescreen format familiar from IMAX cinemas.

In Germany, “28 Years Later” will be released in cinemas on June 19. The screenplay was written by Alex Garland, the main actors are Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes as well as Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle was behind the iPhones.
