Finally returning to theaters after more than a decade, the rage-infected hordes of 28 Days Later will make their comeback in the upcoming 28 Years Later. Much of the speculation surrounding the new film, the third movie in the zombie series centered around the number 28, has focused on original series protagonist Jim, played by Cillian Murphy. 2002’s 28 Days Later made Murphy a star, and despite his character largely being kind of a dickhead, fans would like some consistency within their zombie universe and many believe Murphy will pop up in the new film. Though a producer on the film, Andrew MacDonald, denied that the emaciated zombie in the 28 Years trailer is not Murphy, a write-up by Variety says otherwise. While we’ll still have to wait a few weeks to get to the bottom of that mystery, Boyle still has plans for Jim—assuming he can get a third movie made.
Speaking to IndieWire, Boyle says that Murphy will have a “significant role” in the third film, which he can’t elaborate on, but he does say that it is “clever” and features a “very smart use” of the character. But wait, there’s more. Boyle also confirms Jim has a “very satisfying introduction” in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, the first sequel in this 28 Years trilogy. Boyle saw a rough cut of Bone Temple film and remarked with presumably great enthusiasm, “Oh, yeah, that’s pretty good.”
Boyle clarifies that Murphy will reprise the role of Jim, the world’s unluckiest coma patient. Of course, we have no idea what he’ll be doing or what kind of shape the character will be in—one assumes that 28 years of zombie apocalypse is hell on the body. Still, maybe he’s a member of the Bone Temple, and we’ll see him at the High Holidays if and when 28 Years Later 3 comes to fruition. Maybe we’re all getting a little ahead of ourselves. Call us when 28 Decades Later is ready.
28 Years Later opens on June 20.
