Mike Flanagan’s reboot of The Exorcist has received a disappointing update, with the filmmaker confirming that its release date will be delayed.
Last year it was announced that Flanagan, best known for The Haunting anthology series and Midnight Mass, would lead a “radical new take” on the iconic horror franchise.
Originally slated for release on 13 March, 2026, details on Flanagan’s upcoming film have been in short supply, and the director has now confirmed via Tumblr that the intended release date will not be met.
“Production hasn’t started [on The Exorcist], we need to finish Carrie first,” said Flanagan, referencing his upcoming Prime Video series. “No way it’s coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though.”

This follows the critical failure of David Gordon Green’s 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer, the first instalment in a planned sequel trilogy to the original 1973 film.

Deceiver, film two in the trilogy, was due to be released this year but Green subsequently left the project and the sequel was scrapped.
It was then confirmed that Flanagan was developing a “bold and terrifying, all-new story” unrelated to Believer, with the figure serving as writer, director and producer.
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honour to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” said Flanagan in a statement.

“Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favourite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting,” he added.

Flanagan is known for his adaptations of Stephen King’s work, with Doctor Sleep and Carrie both being based on the author’s novels. Away from the horror genre, Flanagan has also adapted King’s 2020 novella The Life of Chuck, which is set for release in the UK on 22 August.
