A horror film that may have flown under moviegoers’ radars is streaming now on Channel 4, and fans claim it is one of the best zombie movies ever.

Originally released at Sundance Film Festival in 2019, Little Monsters is a genre-bending film, mixing together elements of comedy, horror and romance into its 90-minute runtime.

Its synopsis teases: “Dave, a washed-up musician recovering from a bad break-up, is attracted to his nephew’s teacher, Miss Audrey Caroline. However, his plans to woo her are interrupted by a sudden invasion of zombies.”

When the invasion reaches them during a class trip, the adults join forces to protect Audrey’s students, and a romantic spark blooms between them along the way.

Nyong’o stars as a kindergarten teacher

It was written by Australian filmmaker Abe Forsythe, who is set to direct the next film in the popular RoboCop franchise, RoboCop Returns.

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o leads the cast as kindergarten teacher Miss Caroline, alongside Alexander England (Gods of Egypt), who plays her love interest Dave.

The formidable actress is known for leading blockbusters such as Marvel’s Black Panther, but fans may have missed this 2019 release. In fact, the comedy has no audience reviews published on Rotten Tomatoes and only 231 comments on IMDb, despite dropping at the height of her fame.

Even so, those who caught it upon release were impressed by the off-beat horror. An IMDb crowned it as the “awesomest zombie movie ever,” before adding, “this is the funniest, and sweetest zombie I’ve ever seen. But don’t worry, there’s no lack of gore either! A truly original take.”

“Wrong in so many ways but with a wicked and often hilarious sense of adult comedy – Lupita Nyong’o is an absolute delight!,” praised someone else.

Over on Google, a five-star review reads: “While it’s not your typical scary as hell horror movie and is definitely more of a horror-comedy movie, it is, along with Train To Busan (2016), one of the best zombie movies to date.”

With another fan sharing their glowing verdict, stating: “Revisited this movie recently and could not stop laughing……very funny. The child actors were great along with the adults.”
