Maine is the second most haunted state in America with over 800 sightings a year. In 2023, a record 1,364 people went missing.
Several members of the fabled improv comedy troupe The Groundlings used that as a jumping off point for the found footage horror film McCurdy Point.
It follow four friends documenting a celebratory getaway to a remote cabin in the woods of Maine, only to find themselves pulled into something far more sinister.
Ryan Gaul (“Superstore”), Kiel Kennedy, Joey Krulock, Christian Noah Roberts, Allison Dunbar (“The Sopranos”), Patty Guggenheim (“Twisted Metal”), and Laird Macintosh (“The Mick”) star.
Jeremy Brothers and Nick Paonessa co-direct from a script by Brothers and Gaul, based on an idea by Kennedy.
Brothers, Paonessa, Gaul, and Kennedy serve as producers, with Chris Gierowski (Don’t Fuck in the Woods) and Matthew Gudernatch executive producing.
“In a lot of horror movies, you can’t wait until some characters get killed off,” said Gaul. “It’s something that we noticed because a lot of the them are unlikable. We wanted to flip that and create characters you sympathize with. Hopefully audiences walk away feeling like they lost some friends.”
“We had a lot of versatility in both the cast and crew because we all have a background of working in improv comedy,” added Brothers. “It helped us keep up with the always-changing situations that always come up during a film production.”
McCurdy Point is currently on the festival circuit.
