Some of our older readers might remember a simpler time when game shows were all the rage on TV. Families would line up around the TV to watch shows like Who Wants to be a Millionaire or The Weakest Link and applaud as the contestants won large sums of money. However, there was also a dark side to this game show phenomenon.
As much as people enjoyed these shows, they got a bit stale after a while. This led to the creation of something a bit more edgy, Fear Factor. The premise was simple enough. Contestants would engage in disgusting, dangerous, or horrifying feats for the chance to win a cash prize. The show was an overnight success and became a cultural phenomenon. Unfortunately, the series was canceled for a somewhat odd reason. On his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan explains what really ended the series.
“Fear Factor was canceled because we made people drink donkey c*m. I think I’m the only guy in the history of Hollywood that lost a job because people had to drink c*m. Usually that’s how you get a day job…It wasn’t my idea, I just worked there!…I then said words I never thought I’d say: ‘I don’t think you should make people drink c*m on TV’. When I’m the voice of the reason, you got a really f*cked-up program!”
Luckily, the TV gods have decided to give the series a second life with Fear Factor: The Next Chapter. This new series is expected to hit the Fox Network sometime in 2026. You can read a small teaser for the show below.
“Dropped into an unforgiving, remote location, a group of strangers will live together under one roof, and face mind-blowing stunts, harrowing challenges and a twisted game of social strategy where trust is fleeting — and fear is a weapon.”
Will this new series live up to the hype? Fox Entertainment’s CEO, Rob Wade, seems to think so. In an interview with Variety, Wade explains his optimism for the new project.
“The reinvention piece is critical here. It’s called Fear Factor, and we’re going to take the brand name,” Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade teases. “But I think the producer’s come up with a really interesting take on it, and it’s not going to feel like the show from 20 years ago.”
