Someone else shared, “Just finished it and loved it! Proof that you don’t need a big budget to make a good horror flick. There have been so many movies that attempted to do horror involving tech contemporary tech (smartphone/zoom/social media) and this was by far my favorite.”

They went on to add, “Like, the gimmick didn’t wear the film the film wore the gimmick. And I thought the premise was very original + specific to this era. Was expecting to put it on as a background movie while doing HW but it stole my attention! 100% worth it, my assignment can be late I don’t care lol.”

And continued, “Might be overhyping and biased bc it’s my genre and as a millennial woman who’s been in sh—y relationships but loves her friends, but this was 10/10 for me. Truly original and highly recommend!”

While another fan reviewed, “Just finished watching and can’t recommend it enough. My cousin & I have been getting into movies based solo on a computer like searching, missing, unfriended 1& 2. So this was right up our alley instead of this time it was a phone. The main characters are so likeble and easy to root for.”

After the positive feedback from the film the director of Unseen, Yoko Okumura, shared the process of hand-picking the cast and shared her hopes for the future. In an interview with The Wrap, the Japanese-American filmmaker also shared her hopes for the future and the types of horror movies she hopes to make.

She explained, “I’m always the kind of person who has so many eggs in so many baskets, and plates spinning. I want to continue making colorful, gritty, glamorous, horror films, thriller films. I want to work in genre but bring my feminine pop culture sensibility to it and start making my own version of what horror can be.”

Okumura continued, “I would love to make a body horror film that’s about women in the fashion world. Body horror has been a really powerful genre for me to watch, but then I keep going ‘I want body horror with characters who deeply and toxically care about their bodies and how they look.’”
