Last week, I watched Messiah of Evil on Tubi (on my own recommendation). Midway through the film, Toni (Joy Bang) visits a movie theater because she’s bored in the zombie town. Sure, it spells her doom, but she does at least get to watch a pretty sick Western movie before her death. It got me thinking about how I kind of love Westerns. Yeah, they’re often problematic, but there’s a distinct thrill that few other genres of film can successfully capture. Even better than a Western? Horror westerns.

From Dusk Till Dawn, The Wind (a more recent example), and Ravenous are all classics. But when you think of horror Westerns, there aren’t many to choose from beyond nondescript zombie miners you might find in your local video store. One of the best comes with the added bonus of a Stephen King recommendation. Even better, it’s streaming now on Netflix. Learn more about Bone Tomahawk below.
Per Netflix: In the Old West, a sheriff and a small posse encounter unspeakable atrocity while track the cave-dwelling cannibals who kidnapped several settlers.
Bone Tomahawk rips. It’s a sick movie, and it boasts one of the greatest on-screen ever seen. It’s also terrifying in a way you might not expect, given how bright and vibrant S. Craig Zahler’s filmmaking is. In our review of Bone Tomahawk at the time of release, we wrote, “This film will not only appeal to the horror fanatic in all of us, but is able to cross those rusty railroad tracks and venture over into the western movie lovers’ territory for a more than worthwhile watch – highly recommended.” It’s one of the best horror movies streaming on Netflix right now, so don’t waste any time.

Famed horror author Stephen King remains a huge fan of the film. In a now-deleted tweet, King wrote, “I was expecting nothing but a time-passer on a rainy Wednesday morning, and got a low-budget Western epic. The dialogue alone makes it well worth watching. Beware the last act, when a man is literally torn apart.” It’s such an unassuming horror epic, you’ll be grinning ear to ear by the time the credits roll. Get on it folks and stream Bone Tomahawk.
What do you think? Any plans to check out Bone Tomahawk on Stephen King’s recommendation? Let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins, especially that one particular death scene. It’s a doozy.
