The hit heist movie is directed by the man behind some of the biggest superhero films
Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, brought his super skills to Netflix for this 2021 post-apocalyptic film.
Army of the Dead is a zombie heist film with an impressive ensemble cast that has left viewers entertained. One review on the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes even claimed that the film is an “unusual creation,” and yet it all seems to work for them.
They wrote: “Very unusual production. The director plays with many motifs and genres here, creating a very unusual creation that, despite its quirks, works perfectly, not only laying the foundations for a new universe well but also introducing a lot of threads that will provide food for all theory fans. Time loop? Aliens? It’s all here.”

The film follows as the city of Las Vegas is abandoned and overrun with zombies due to a disastrous government. A billionaire casino businessman has left behind millions of dollars secured in a vault, and this group of mercenaries has the skills required to retrieve it.
Taking the ultimate gamble, they decide to venture out into the danger zone in an attempt to pull off a monumental money heist. The billionaire gives them an offer they cannot refuse to secure the money before the US president’s plans to nuke the zombie-infested city.
A critic shared: “Zack Snyder’s ridiculously entertaining latest is a zombie heist movie with gore at its core.” While one viewer claimed the movie was “not great,” but they still had “a lot of fun.”
Despite only showing in cinemas for a short week in the US, due to its digital Netflix release, Army of the Dead won the Oscars Fan Favorite contest at the 94th Academy Awards. And in that short-lived theatre run, it grossed $1 million at the box office.
A review reads: “Army of the Dead is a thrilling cinematic experience that brilliantly blends action, horror, and a touch of dark humor. The movie’s intense pace keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, with each scene carefully crafted to deliver maximum impact.
“David Bautista’s performance is nothing short of extraordinary; he brings a deep, emotional complexity to his character that adds a surprising layer of depth to the film.”
The cast is made up of ex-WWE wrestler David Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Yellowjackets actress Ella Purnell, Theo Rossi, and a whole load of others. The film was missing one original cast member, Chris D’Elia, who was replaced using green screens and CGI after several sexual misconduct allegations were made against him.
Many viewers have praised the cast’s acting throughout the film, while others were left unimpressed. One person claimed: “The worst roster of characters I’ve seen in a zombie movie, and probably the worst writing.”

Another viewer wrote: “Great zombie flick; the opening sequence alone was top-tier, over-the-top entertainment. The movie was flashy, had a great cast, and had a great story. So many questions that I just can’t wait for them to be answered.
“Lots of crazy things you will spot after re-watching multiple times. Zack set a good foundation for a hopeful franchise to take off”.
