COLUMN: Movies to go see during summer break – Indiana Daily Student

If you’re looking for fun things to do during summer break, going to the movies with friends, family or even by yourself is a great activity to do. Here are 10 new movies coming to theaters this summer.

This comedy film follows Craig (Tim Robinson), a classic suburban dad, as he attempts to befriend his charming new neighbor, Austin (Paul Rudd). The movie is meant to poke fun at the idea that men can’t have deep male friendships. Early reviews have praised the film for being genuinely very funny throughout the entire run time, so if you’re looking for a good laugh, this could be a good movie to go see. The film is set to have a wide release May 23.

In this horror movie made by the filmmakers of the 2022 film “Talk to Me,” a brother and sister get wrapped up in an eerie ritual at their new foster mother’s home. This film is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat and might keep you up at night, so it would be a good choice for horror movie buffs. The film will come to theaters May 30.

This adaptation of the Stephen King novella of the same name follows three chapters in the life of a normal man named Charles (Tom Hiddleston). This work is evidently very different from other Stephen King stories as it lacks the horror elements commonly found in his work. I am personally very excited to see what this film has in store as I think it will be interesting to see King tackle a different genre. The film is co-written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who has made some of my favorite series of all-time including “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor.” I can’t wait to see how his distinctive way of exploring human struggles and connections plays out in this film. The movie will come to theaters June 6.

In this rom-com, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) runs a successful matchmaking business in New York City, but her life gets turned upside down when she gets herself into a messy love triangle with her supposed “perfect” match, Harry (Pedro Pascal) and her flawed ex, John (Chris Evans). This cast list alone should be enough to go see this movie the second it comes out; but on top of this it is written and directed by the amazing Celine Song, who previously made the 2023 film “Past Lives.” The film is set to release June 13.

This live action adaptation of the 2010 animated film of the same name follows Hiccup (Mason Thames) as he befriends a dragon despite his island’s dragon-hating culture. While I’m not the biggest fan of live action remakes, I’ve seen many fans of the original film very excited with this new adaptation, so this could be a must-see for die-hard fans. The film will be released June 13.

In Pixar’s newest film, Elio (Yonas Kibreab) loves space and manages to successfully get himself abducted by aliens but must deal with intergalactic crises while forming bonds with the aliens. If you’re looking for a silly movie, or want to have a nice family outing, this would be a good choice. The film will hit theaters June 20.

The third installment in the “28 Days Later” franchise follows a group of survivors of a virus that turns people into killing machines 28 years after the first outbreak as they discover new mutations affecting both the infected and the survivors. The trailer for this movie alone is a masterpiece, so I’m sure this film will get your heart racing and would be perfect for zombie horror lovers. The film is set to release June 20.

This reboot explores Clark Kent (David Corenswet), also known as Superman, as he learns about his alien heritage while balancing his life on Earth. This newest adaptation of the iconic comic book character also marks the beginning of the DCU, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. For fans of DC Comics and Superman specifically, this is a very exciting release as it has the opportunity to be a more comic accurate adaptation of the superhero and could be the start of better DC movies in general. The film hits theaters July 11.

In this contemporary Western film written and directed by Ari Aster, who is known for “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) go head-to-head during the COVID-19 pandemic, polarizing the community of Eddington, New Mexico. If you’ve been a fan of Aster’s previous works, this would definitely be worth checking out as he always brings a very distinctive and striking style to his films. The movie will be released July 18.

In this Marvel adaptation of the “Fantastic Four” comic book characters, a group of superheroes must defend Earth from an evil space god. The movie has a very different tone from many other Marvel movies thanks to its 1960s aesthetic and will definitely be a breath of fresh air amidst the rather dull landscape of Marvel movies of late. The movie will hit theaters July 25.
