Peter McLeod’s ‘FIRST MOON’ (2025) – Movie Review – PopHorror

If you read a lot of my reviews, you will know that British horror isn’t my thing. At all. But I am willing to watch anything once, because I just love the genre that much. I never want to be let down. Unfortunately there are some movies out there that just dont interest me at all. You would think the mixture of my least favorite stories are based in the UK or werewolf movies. First Moon is a bit of a shocker and I was quite surprised by how interested I was.

Synopsis

A young waitress (Lauren Esposito) is abducted by a religious cult, who are hell-bent on curing her from a sexually transmitted werewolf virus – or killing her in the process. The cult subjects her to torturous “healing remedies” with each interview becoming more violent.. Will she escape before the first full moon?

It’s A Surprise

It seemed like the entire movie was created for me not to enjoy, however; this story is much different. The movie broke another pet peeve of mine, which is waiting for the last 10 minutes of the film to see what you came for. Although there is a ton of diaogue; there are also some parts that mad me cringe. First Moon isn’t what I expected at all. The movie jumped into my brain and kept me focused.

What makes this film so different is the amount of time it keeps you tense. Although there is not much gore, they step it up in certain ways, trying to make the story seem real. The setup was super slow, but delivered moments to keep you interested. The story is definiltely a modern tale of what werewolves would be. You wait for the moments that cast is all together, they play off each other very well. You could se the connection between everyone. They were here to do what they love and put passion into each scene.

Real Life

You can feel the same pain as the victims at certain points and you wait for these people to start dying, unfortunately you have to wait until the very end to see justice served. The film makes the wait worth it with some really great practical FX instead of using CGI, or even worse, AI to create the madness you wanted to badly. Though there is a really long wait, the setup is just there to make you more angry. I ended up despising the enemy, just like I was expected to.

In The End

First Moon makes you hate the idea of religion, exposing the cult behind the “holy” men and women. You feel the same fear at each moment that the victims feel. You can feel their pain because they play the character so well. It’s because from the very begining the film does not play mind games, making it seem that there were years of practice for these characters alone. Of course that isn’t the case, but the cast does so well creating this mad idea that this can be very real, while using legendary monsters.

I would give it at least one try, don’t come expecting to be let down, because you will survive through the watch just fine. Maybe you will even love it. Judge for yourself.
