Resident Evil 9 gets biggest tease yet as Capcom hides secret in new RE4 video

Resident Evil 9 will surely mark some kind of reimagining of Capcom’s stalwart survival horror series. RE7 was a worthy experiment – I personally didn’t like it, at all, but at least it was trying something. Village on the other hand was a mess, and proof proper that Resident Evil needs stripping down again. We have to go back to basics: city, zombies, T-Virus. The rumored Code Veronica remake could be good, but RE needs fresh stories. Based on a new video from Capcom to mark the sales of RE4 Remake, it seems that Resident Evil 9 – in whatever form it may take – could finally be real.

Ten million copies of Resident Evil 4 Remake have now been sold. To celebrate the milestone, Capcom has released a short new video, complete with a fist-pumping Leon Kennedy and Ganados in party hats. It seems perfectly innocuous, but there’s something hidden, right at the end. If you pay close attention, a wooden sign from the action horror game seems to hint at the existence of Resident Evil 9.

See that? If you turn the signpost on its side, it spells ‘IX,’ the Roman numerals for number nine. First spotted by long-time Resident Evil sleuth ‘Dust Golem,’ this could be the biggest tease of RE9’s existence to date. Also intriguing, back in October a listing for Resident Evil 9 suddenly appeared on review aggregation site Metacritic, maybe hinting that the sequel is in development – and has been for a short while.

Two years since Resident Evil 4 Remake and four since RE Village, the time does feel right for a new game. We’ll have to wait and see what Capcom has hidden in its attaché case, but I’m hoping for something that feels totally new; a reinvention of the series, but without straying into turgid lore and anything-goes monsters and bosses, like RE7 and RE8.
