In a long-awaited, and momentous announcement, Sony Pictures has confirmed the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic 28 Days Later. Titled 28 Years Later, the sequel promises to reignite the post-apocalyptic world crafted by director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, with the added thrill of Cillian Murphy possibly returning to reprise his breakout role.
The original film, released in 2002, captivated audiences with its gripping narrative and gritty depiction of a world ravaged by a deadly virus that turns its victims into frenzied, flesh-eating zombies. Its success not only revitalized the zombie genre but also cemented Boyle and Garland’s reputations as visionary storytellers.
For nearly two decades, fans have eagerly awaited news of a sequel, hoping to revisit the haunting landscapes and adrenaline-fueled survival struggles of the first film. Now, their patience has been rewarded with the announcement of 28 Years Later, promising a fresh chapter in the saga.
Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reunited to write and direct the sequel, which also comes with a Part 2, to be written by Garland. Boyle would only direct the first project, with the sequel’s director to be determined at a later stage
As of now, Cillian Murphy is only signed on as an executive producer but has expressed that he would gladly reprise his role as Jim for the next instalment (he wasn’t in the sequel 2007 28 Weeks Later).
“I can’t give much more at this point,” he began. “But I’ve always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me – I have great affection for it and for those guys, [Alex and Danny]. I never watch my own films, except that one.
“It’s always on around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips. And I’ve shown it to my kids. It’s really stood up, even though it’s 22 years old now, so I’m really thrilled that we’ll get the band back together to make this one.”
There had long been rumors of sequel to the franchise and protracted bidding war around it’s rights, but with Sony emerging victorious, we have official confirmation of its existence, with more details to come.
