AMC and AMC+ will release the newest spinoff of The Walking Dead in February. Titled The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, the latest addition to TWDU will feature the return of fan-favorite characters Rick and Michonne. TWDU consists of the main series and, after February 2024, six spinoffs. Some of the series are multiple seasons, while others are limited.
The Ones Who Live has been created to replace a trilogy of movies focused on Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who was thought to have died in season 9. Viewers were privy to the fact that Rick survived the explosion at the bridge and was rescued by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and the CRM (Civic Republic Military). When Lincoln was announced as exiting the series, AMC Network announced the movies. Since that time, things have changed within the company, and AMC decided to create a series instead.
The Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) series will consist of six episodes that will debut on AMC and AMC+ on February 25, 2024. This date is significant because it falls on the sixth anniversary of TWD episode “Honor,” which featured the death of Carl Grimes.
As far as being a limited series, reports are mixed. One outlet originally reported that The Ones Who Live isn’t limited but will see more seasons, while other reports have stated it will, in fact, be a limited six-episode series. I guess we have to wait until AMC makes an official announcement one way or another.
The Ones Who Live will focus heavily on the CRM, the military division of the Civic Republic, a highly advanced civilization with over 200,000 people in its population.
Jadis returns in this series she serves as a warrant officer within the organization. When she and Rick were taken away in the helicopter in season 9 of The Walking Dead, she saw an opportunity to make a name for herself within the CRM. She used Rick as her ticket of entry and worked her way to her new position. Will she be a friend or foe in the new series? It will be interesting to find out.
